How Moss Walls Redefined an Indian Restaurant’s Ambiance

More and more workplaces are using biophilic design, bringing nature in with things like plants and natural materials, to help people feel good and work better. One cool idea is preserved moss walls. They look like real greenery but need zero care – no watering, no sun!
This post is about how natural moss designed walls totally changed a restaurant. It made the place feel warmer and more welcoming, really boosting the whole dining experience and showing off what the restaurant is all about.

The Challenge
During the 2020 lockdown, the new owner of an Indian restaurant in Aberdeen's Union Square had a vision. The place, which used to be Italian, felt cold with its brick and tile. He wanted to create a warm, natural vibe for his diners. Since the space didn't get much sunlight, real plants were out. More than just looking good, he wanted guests to feel a connection and see how much he cared. He needed an easy way to bring the outdoors in and reflect his Indian roots.
Solution
After chatting about his vision and challenges, we came up with a design that didn’t just add greenery, it told a story. We combined natural wood with preserved moss to create a calm, welcoming vibe. A moss-covered Indian rickshaw bike became a standout piece, framing the logo beautifully. To reflect Indian culture, we used rich, bold colours, while floating moss balls (Kokedama) above the bar brought a playful, organic touch. One of my favourite parts was a three-frame artwork that felt like a peaceful walk through the forest. We also replaced the bar’s tile walls with feature walls that tied in the brand colours, logo, and moss, finishing it off with a smooth wood-and-moss transition into the kitchen.
The Result
The project came together in three smooth stages, transforming the restaurant into a calm, welcoming space filled with natural greenery. It’s now a place where guests can relax, connect, and enjoy good food in a soothing environment.Beyond the visual impact, the moss walls brought real benefits, helping reduce stress and creating a more inviting dining experience. They also became a standout feature, reinforcing the brand’s focus on well-being, authenticity, and creativity, and sparking conversation among guests.

Immediately after installation, the restaurant transformed into a warm, striking space. Moss and wood created a calming atmosphere. The logo and Kokedamas sparked conversations. Employees felt a fresh, creative environment. The restaurant became a unique Aberdeen destination, enhancing its brand and attracting customers.
